Jazz Improvisation: The 4 Elements

Here’s a topic that I love to think about and the more I think about it the deeper it takes me. This is not something that I can give as an exercise and say “here you go, do this in your practice.” Although, you can decide to make a conscious effort when you’re playing to play differently to how you normally would play, and that can be very beneficial.

This topic is about hearing, feeling and playing the 4 elements within jazz improvisation. The 4 elements are Earth, Fire, Water and Air.

Earth is about being grounded or rooted to the beat, and having a strong connection to the groove and the rhythm.

Fire is passion and high energy emotion, which can be portrayed as a yearning for more, for higher and faster notes.

Water is emotional playing, with a lower energy. This can be beautiful, melodic playing with interesting lines and phrases.

Finally, Air is the intellect. This means very intelligent playing focussing on the theory of what you’re playing and what’s coming next. It can be very technically challenging or intricate.

I encourage you to a) listen to your own playing and get an idea of what element you think represents it, b) make an effort to play differently by focussing on different elements, and c) have a listen to your favourite jazz musicians and listen out for what elements they might be representing in their playing.

I hope you enjoyed this little look into the 4 elements. If you like the graphic and the concept of the 4 elements be sure to check out these products which feature this design (hoodies, bags, socks etc.)
